Welcome to another interview from the Brand Exreme Series from Video Games Shirts Online, showcasing the best brands in video game apparel.

This week we have Rockhart Clothing

A one man operation from the USA.

We have Andrew Lockhart, the owner of Rockhart Clothing to tell us more about this cool brand.

Who are the people behind Rockhart Clothing? Can you start by giving some background about yourself? Where you are from? Who creates the designs?

I’m a graphic designer/illustrator/gamer living in the best city in the United States—Portland, OR.
Rockhart is a one-man operation run by me, Andrew. I create the designs, ship the orders, and run the website/social media.

What process do you follow when designing a shirt?

Honestly, I just start sketching. Sometimes I’ll look through old drawings or play some games for ideas, but usually I’m starting off with a solid concept.
I get ideas at random times too, whether it’s on the bus or in the middle of the night, so I always keep a sketchbook handy. After I sketch out the idea, I scan it. Then, I work on it in Illustrator until it look shirt-worthy!

Where did you get the name Rockhart Clothing?

I got the nickname “Rockhart” from a few of my close friends while we were playing Halo 2. I really liked using rocket launchers + my last name’s Lockhart = Rockhart.
The name stuck and I’ve been using it for my gaming ID ever since. So when I was trying to come up with a cool idea for a video game inspired clothing line, it made sense to choose Rockhart.
It fit both the cool rock & roll vibe I was going for and the video game aspect, too (hart => heart => 8bit heart).

I personally love the statement “We’re adding rock and roll style to the video game apparel market”. Can you tell me more about this and the brand Rockhart Clothing?

Rock was started by the nerd, the socially awkward kid who stayed in on a Friday night playing guitar.
But it quickly became the most popular genre of music. It’s influenced every part of our society from lifestyle to even the way we talk… and that rocks!
I think that video game fashion could learn a lot from that. Why cant video game shirts should be cool?

What makes Rockhart Clothing different from other Apparel Vendors? What is your USP?

There are a ton of video game shirts and companies out there. And a lot of them look the same.
They’re uninspired designs printed on low quality tees, which you wouldn’t want to wear out. With Rockhart, all my designs are printed on some of the nicest blanks I could find.
They also have original designs created by me and not blatantly ripped from a game.
These shirts are all about repping your love for video games, and looking cool while doing it.

What’s coming next for Rockhart Clothing?

More shirts! I’m also looking into other stuff like flasks, jackets, patches, etc. But shirts will always be the staple.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years both for yourselves and your business?

I have a sketchbook full of ideas—some which may be a long ways out. Everything from custom shoes to a store/arcade.
But the only way I’m going to get there is by continuing to offer awesome stuff gamers want.

How much importance do you place on Facebook Twitter and similar sites when marketing your brand?

Social media is huge. I’m trying to post more on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, plus I recently joined tumblr.
For a small, one-man operation who can’t spend much on advertising, social networking sites are awesome.
Plus, it lets me interact with Rockhart fans.

When getting your apparel printed what is the process that you prefer?

Discharge or water-based inks. You want to see the print, not feel it!

What brands of apparel do you prefer to print on?

American Apparel and Next Level are the only ones I’ll use. They’re the best brands out there.

What would a customer expect when ordering a product from yourselves?

Besides a huge thank you from me? With every order, I include a handwritten note and a goodie bag filled with buttons, stickers, vintage video game trading cards, and whatever other cool stuff I have on hand.

Anyone you want to give a shout out to?

My family and friends, Kaitlin Stewart (@pwnlove on twitter), Rob (@twinserpents), Jon Kay (@thejonkay), and of course anyone who’s bought anything or spread the word about Rockhart Clothing!

Who are your favourite designers and/or brands?

This is always a hard question. Johnny Cupcakes, Olly Moss, James White, Hydro 74, 8 Bit Zombie (Ross), and Electric Zombie (Kyle Crawford), to name a few. All of those guys rock!

What is your favourite video game?

That’s a tough one. For NES, it would be Mario 3; for SNES and Arcade, it’d be Sunset Riders; and for a more modern system, Halo 2 for Xbox.

Where is the best place to find your designs and buy some of your shirts? And of course get in contact with you

I know you have released a few new tees recently, anything new in the pipeline?

I’m working on something really cool to be released soon after the start of the new year.
